Basic Hair Drawing Lesson 1

Today’s Advanced Basic Hair Drawing tutorial is brought to you by the kind effort of MistaYoh (Do visit his DA Gallery, his art is teh nice X3). I have personally found it extremely helpful in visualizing and drawing hair, and do go on after the jump to read it.

Firstly, you will have to note that the head is a sphere.

1) Draw your head with a circular ball as usual

2) You will need to know where the hair line is for an anime character. It is USUALLY positioned in the 1/3 or 1/4 top hemisphere of the sphere. It is also above the eyebrow (Duh.)

(That’s why you need to draw your hair so that it falls in the above arrow direction to give it a more dynamic feel)

3) JUST WHACK! Don’t hesitate. Relax and let your lines flow. If the hair is long, use your entire arm instead of just the wrist. It will help with flow. Making sure that a line is continuous is the secret of long flowy hair. Just remember where to let your hair begin with the hairline and the shape you want to produce.

4) There are many types of hair. Above are some examples: Left is the blob-like big blobs of hair where hair is grouped simply. Middle: slightly more complicated, used by most artists. Right much thinner lines and require more control… used in detailed pictures or closeups.

Another tip is to remember a very basic idea that the top area of the hair is thicker then the bottom. It’ll produce boring but very very practical hair.

Exaggeration is the key point of making hair beautiful and cool. Copy your favorite artists and try drawing their hair

Finally, have fun drawing! That’s the whole point of it.
